Umananda Temple of Lord Shiva is located on the Peacock Island, within the middle of river Brahmaputra. Peacock Island is known as the smallest inhabited river island in the world. 1. Kamakhya Temple- A prominent Shakti Peeth of Saktism.


It is located on the Nilachal Hills to the western part of Guwahati in Assam. Kamakhya Temple is one of the most revered shrines of Goddess Shakti in India. There are four important spots of temples (Shakti Peethas) considered as the temple of great divinity according to the Hindu scriptures, within the country and Kamakhya Temple is one of them. Kamakhya Temple celebrates the ability of the girl to present birth and is thought to be extremely auspicious among the followers of the Tantrik sect of Hinduism. It had been built and reconstructed between the 8th and 17th Centuries.

The temple entrance is beautifully designed with elegant carvings which are decorated with colourful flowers. The temple looks a massive dome which overlooks the Nilachal Hills within the background. The temple is thronged with devotees during the Ambubachi Festival and fare which is being held for 3-4 Days within the month of June.


2. Assam State Museum - where one can have a glimpse of Assamese tradition and culture


The Assam State Museum is in the heart of Guwahati city and situated by the side of  Dighali Pukhuri. it's one of the foremost museums of the North- East India. It offers great insights into the rich culture of ancient Assam and stores the immense and invaluable memories of the rich traditions of ancient Assam.



3. Umananda Temple-A location which housed the Shiva Temple in the midst of Brahmaputra

Umananda Devaloi is a temple of Lord Siva located in the Umananda Island in the midst of river Brahmaputra near opposite the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup or the Kachari Ghat in Guwahati.
It is known as smallest inhabited river island in the world. Visitors are taken to the island on country boats which are available on the bank of Brahmaputra. The temple has been built over the mountain known as Bhasmacala.

5. Nehru Park – A place of recreation

Nehru Park is one of the oldest parks in Assam. It is a major park located in the middle of the city of Guwahati, in front of Cotton College, a premier educational institution. It is a place of recreation and entertainment for the people of Guwahati. Previously it was a part of an old church and later developed by Assam Govt.



6. Guwahati Planetarium – where one can have a study of the constellation and observations

Guwahati Planetarium  is a center of astronomical education and research in Assam. It is the only one of its kind in the entire northeastern region of India. The Guwahati Planetarium has a shape of a dome with sloping walls.



7. Guwahati Zoo – which exhibits the invaluable flora and fauna

8. Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary – where one can have a glimpse of the famous one horned rhino 

It is a wildlife sanctuary located on the southern bank of the river Brahmaputra. It was declared as Wild Life Sanctuary in 1987 and falls under Morigaon district of Assam. It covers an area of  38.85 km2 (15.00 sq mi), and presents a perfect providing grassland and wetland for the Indian rhinoceros.




9. Navagraha Temple – A religious place

The Navagraha temple is located on the top of Chitrasal Hill in Guwahati. The temple is dedicated to the the nine (nava) major celestial bodies of Hindu astronomy i.e. Navagraha. The celestial bodies are the Surya (Sun), Chandra (Moon), Mangala (Mars), Budh (Mercury), Brihaspati (Jupiter), Shukra (Venus), Shani (Saturn), Rahu (North Lunar Node) and Ketu (South Lunar Node). Inside the temple there are nine shivalingams corresponding to each celestial body are worshipped and each lingams are covered with seperate coloured garments. The inside shape of the temple is octagonal in shape. And the lingam of Sun is at the centre of temple. The Ahom King Rajeswar Singha built the Navagraha Temple in Guwahati around 1752 A,D.


10. Madan Kamdev – A temple depicting the symbol of love

Madan Kamdev is originally an archaeological site and it dates to 10th and 12 th century AD. It is situated in Baihata Chariali in the district of Kamrup, Assam. According to some historian the temple was built in the time pf pala kings. The river Mandakini flows besides the temple. Is is stated in the hindu mythology that Lord Shiva burned Madan the God of Love into ashes and thus the temple of love was resurrected at that place. The Indian Archaeological Department discovered the place only in 1977.

12. ISKCON Guwahati – Discussion on the works of Lord Krishna

The Society has got international recognition and has many branches across the world. ISKCON Guwahati is one of the branch located in Ulubari in the Guwahati. 13. Haajo – a historical place of importance

Hajo which is about 24 kms from Guwahati is a place of pilgrimage for religions of Hindu, Muslim and Buddhism. 14. Pandu – originally a port in Guwahati

The suburban city of Pandu is named after King Pandu (father of the famous five Pandavas). A temple in the Tila hills of the city is dedicated to Pandu (Temple of Pandunath).Here are five Ganesha idols representing the five Pandavas: It is believed that the Pandavas hid here under the guise of Ganesha during his exile. There are many other sculptures at this place too.


15. Bhuvaneshwari Temple – where one can have the whole view of the city

This white temple dedicated to the Goddess Bhuvaneshwari is located on the top of a hill adjacent to the city, which is a great attraction among religious pilgrims. The temple itself offers visitors a spectacular panoramic view of the Guwahati city.
